About this standard pedigree chart

A standard pedigree chart represents family members and relationships. A square represents a male, and a circle represents a female. When a square or circle has an arrow pointing to its corner, it shows the proband. Deceased males are shown with a slashed square, and deceased females are shown with a slashed circle.

A blue square shows an affected male, while a pink circle shows an affected female. A square with a cross on top represents an examined male, and a circle with a line on top represents an examined female. Carriers are represented by a square with a blue dot for males and a circle with a pink dot for females.

Fraternal twins are shown with two squares or circles connected from the top, while identical twins also include a horizontal line connecting them in between. An adopted male is represented by a square with an "A" inside, and an adopted female by a circle with an "A."

A diagonally rotated square represents a person of unknown sex, and smaller rotated squares show short-lived individuals or miscarriages. Marriages are shown by a line connecting a square and circle, while consanguineous marriages use double lines. Divorce is represented by a double slash through the connecting line.
