About this bank management ERD example

A bank management ER diagram models how banking data entities relate in a database. This editable example is a starting point for mapping entities such as Bank or Branch, Customer, Account, Transaction, and Employee before you design tables and keys.

For a fuller core-banking model, Loan, Account Type, Payment, or a Customer-Account association entity may also be required. What belongs in the ERD depends on the system scope.

Common relationships include Bank-to-Branch, Branch-to-Account, Account-to-Transaction, and Customer-to-Account. The last relationship needs special attention: a simple system may allow one owner per account, while joint accounts require a many-to-many design or an associative entity such as CustomerAccount or AccountHolder.

Employees are normally assigned to a bank or branch rather than to individual accounts unless the business rules explicitly require an account-manager relationship.

Treat the cardinalities in this template as examples, not universal banking rules. Define each relationship from the project requirements, then mark primary keys, foreign keys, optionality, and cardinality consistently.

This makes the template useful for database planning, coursework, requirements workshops, and early schema reviews. It does not model transaction workflow, user permissions, or security controls by itself.

Use the ERD to confirm the data objects a banking application must store and how records connect before creating physical tables.

The diagram is especially useful for checking primary-key and foreign-key paths, one-to-many versus many-to-many relationships, and whether a bridge entity is needed for cases such as joint accounts.

Its limitation is intentional: an ERD describes data structure, not process order or security behavior. Keep workflow and authorization rules in complementary requirements or process/UML diagrams.

  • Common core entities are Customer, Account, Transaction, Branch, and Bank; many models also include Loan and Employee. Add or remove entities according to the actual scope, then define key attributes such as CustomerID, AccountNumber, BranchID, and TransactionID.

  • The correct cardinality depends on the business rules. A simplified model may use one customer to many accounts, but systems that support joint ownership usually need a many-to-many Customer-to-Account relationship resolved through an associative entity such as AccountHolder or CustomerAccount.

  • Start by identifying entities from the requirements, list their key attributes and primary keys, define relationships and cardinalities, introduce associative entities where needed, assign foreign keys, and then validate the model against exceptions such as joint accounts, multiple branches, loans, and transaction history.
