Goh Cheng Liang Family Tree

Son of Wu Songchang and Li Xiuying, Goh Cheng Liang was born in 1927 in Singapore. He lived in poverty and spent the early years of his life in a shophouse at River Valley Road. In an interview with Business Times, he said, “My parents were very poor. During the Japanese Occupation, my father was jobless, my mother was washing laundry, and my sister was selling soon kway.”

During World War II, his parents sent him to Johor, where he helped his brother-in-law sell fishing nets. After returning to Singapore, Goh Cheng started multiple business ventures. His life truly changed in 1974 when he founded Wuthelam Holdings and invested in the Japanese paint company, Nippon. Currently, Cheng’s $13 billion worth largely comes from this company.

Goh was also a philanthropist. He established the Goh Foundation in 1995 to support cancer research. He was a cancer survivor himself and promoted donations for welfare agencies.

After getting his doctorate from the California Institute of Technology, Chuen began his career as a non-executive director at Superior Multi-Packaging Ltd. Currently, he serves as a Director at Wigetworks Pte Ltd and the family-owned Goh Foundation Ltd.

After Chuen, Goh Cheng Liang had a daughter, Goh Chiat Jin. She leads a private life and has not been actively involved in the business community. In 2020, she was an investor in the TSI Group Management Limited, alongside his elder brother, Hup Jin.

Apart from this, Goh Cheng Liang has eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; however, information about them is not public. Unlike other business giants, Goh Cheng Liang leads a private life and has been discreet about his family. To his closest ones, he was a humble and private man with a great sense of humor.
