Part 1. The Targaryen Family Tree

The Targaryen family can be traced back to Fire and Blood. Spanning over 16 generations, the original Targaryens were located on Essos continent. However, they were destroyed by the cataclysmic at the Doom of Valyria. After experiencing a humiliating defeat, King Aegon I Targaryen makes his way to the west of Dragonstone.

In House of the Dragon, it was implied that Aegon united the Westeros Kingdom with the help of his three dragons. Later on, he established Targaryen rule with his two sons, King Aenys I Targaryen and King Maegor I Targaryen. The second son, King Maegor, was a tyrant who initiated several conflicts, ending up with many wedlocks within the family. Later, he was overthrown by widespread rebellion in Westeros.

Following Maegor’s death, Prince Jaehaerys was named the King of the Seven Kingdoms. The Queen Regent and Rogar Baratheon, two loyal to King Jaehaerys, also leveraged the power to rule the place until he was 16. The King finally met his sister Alysanne and became the longest-ruling authority among Targaryans. He also established peace with the Faith. King Jaehaery’s lineage was further continued by King Viserys in the House of the Dragon.

Part 2. The Valyarian Family Free

Velaryons are finally included in the House of the Dragon; however, their noble line is absent in the show. Their family often overlaps with the Targaryens. The Velaryon and Targaryen families enjoy the same lineage that traces back to the Old Valyria. However, Velaryons are not dragonlords but sea serpents who are close allies of the Targaryens.

The earliest Velaryon shown in the House of the Dragon is Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake who marries Rhaenys Targaryen to establish a political association. Rhayena was the daughter of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. Together, they hand two children, Laenor and Laena, both marrying Targaryens, heirs to King Viserys later on.

Laenor marries Queen Rhaenyra, the only daughter of King Viserys, with Queen Aemma Arryn. Together, they had three sons, Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffery. Similarly, Laena Velaryon married Daemon Targaryen, the brother of King Viserys and the second husband of Queen Rhaenyra. Together, they had twin daughters, Baela and Rhaena Targaryen.

Part 3. Relation Between Targaryens of the House of Dragon and Games of Thrones

Confused about the hierarchy of the Targaryens from House of the Dragon and Games of Thrones? Let us see who inherited the throne from whom with this House of the Dragon family tree extension.

Targaryens of the House of the Dragon

King Viserys I

The Targaryan family of the House of Dragon starts with the Seven Kingdoms ruler, King Viserys I. He was born to Baelon I Targaryen and Alyssa Targaryen, the descendants of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.

First Queen Aemma Arryn

King Viserys married Aemma Arryn. Her appearances in the story are traumatic, often pressured by the King’s desire to deliver an heir. However, the newborn Baelon Targaryen did not survive and died soon after birth.

Princess/Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen

After the death of infant brother Baelon, Princess Rhaenyra, the first and sole daughter to King Viserys I and Queen Aemma Arryn, became the next in line. After Visery’s death, she was declared the Queen of the Seven Kingdom.

Laenor Velaryon

Queen Rhaenyra’s first husband was Laenor Velaryon until the secret escape was exposed. Together, they had three children: Jacaerys Velaryon, Lucerys Velaryon, and Joffery Velaryon.

  • Jacerys, or Jace, was betrothed to marry his step-sister Baela Targaryen.
  • Lucerys, or Luke, claimed the DriftMark throne and was set to marry Lady Rhaena Targaryen. However, he was later killed by Aemon.

Daemon Targaryen

Later, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen married King Visery’s younger brother, Daemon Targaryen, and her uncle. After murdering his first wife, Rhea Royce, Damon married Laena Velaryon and had twin daughters, Baela and Ehaena. Following this, he married Queen Rhaenyra, becoming the King Consort of Westeros.

Together, they had two children, Aegon III and Viserys II. It was Viserys II whose descendants continued in the Games of Thrones series.

Second Queen Alicent Hightower

Alicent Hightower, daughter of Otto Hightower and a friend of Princess Rhaenyra, married King Viserys following the death of Queen Aemma Arryn. Together, they had four children: Prince Aegon Targaryen, Princess Helaena Targaryen, Prince Aemond Targaryen, and Prince Daeron Targaryen.

Later, Queen Alicent told Prince Aegon of his father’s last wish to see him on the throne.  It resulted in him taking control of the SevKingdomsdom as a replacement for his half-sister Rhaenyra.

Targaryens of Games of Thrones

Aemon Targaryen

Aemon Targaryen, married to Maeker I, was the oldest Targaryan we met on Games of Thrones, following the lineage of King Viserys I. He is the great grand uncle of King Aerys II and the father of Daenerys Targaryen.

Aegon V

Aegon V was the fourth son of Maeker I and Aemon’s brother. His son Jaehaerys married his sister Shaera and had two kids, Aerys II (also known as the Mad King) and Rhaella, who also married each other.

King Aerys II

King Aerys II, though, started sane and eventually lost his mind due to unfortunate incidents in his life like kidnapping, miscarriages, being tortured by enemies, and stillborn children. Later, Aerys was killed by a member of his guard, Sir Jamie Lannister, marking the end of the Targaryen rule.

Rhaegar Targaryen

The firstborn of Aerys II, Rhaegar, was Elia Martell’s husband, though he secretly had a marriage with Lyanna Stark, who was already betrothed to Robert Baratheon. Together, they had Aegon Targaryen or Jon Snow. However, Lyanna asked her brother Eddard to protect her son before her death, who brought him up as a “bastard son” rather than a royal heir.

Rhaegar was killed in a combat. His first wife, Elia Martell, along with her two children, were also murdered during the Sack of Kings landing, leaving Jon Snow the sole Targaryen heir to the Iron Throne.

Viserys Targaryen

Viserys Targaryen was the second son of King Aerys II. He was exiled from the Seven Kingdoms with the youngest sister, Dan or Daenerys. His story ended when Khal Drogo poured melted gold on his head to avenge Dan, who was bullied by Viserys during exile.

Daenerys Targaryen

Born in exile with Viserys, Daenerys Targaryen was the youngest daughter of King Aerys II. She married Khal Drogo and had a lot of dragons by her side, earning her the title of Mother of Dragons. Later on, after venturing across Westeros and the death of her two dragons, Jorah Mormont and Missandei, she was driven to madness. During the Finale, Jon Snow, her nephew and lover, killed her to protect the Seven Kingdoms from her brutality.

Jon Snow

Jon Snow, raised by his maternal uncle along with the Stark siblings, was the illegitimate son of King Aerys II. He was originally the night watch guard and was finally confirmed to be the Iron Throne heir in the Season Seven finale. However, he refused the position, and a new democratic system was established in Westeros, marking the end of Targaryen rule.

Part 5. Conclusion

Targaryens were not just brutish and deceitful but complicated for an average mind. Their loyalties, family feuds, and political marriages with Velaryons challenged our brains’ capacity to visualize the family hierarchy. Also, its sequel, Game of Thrones, new characters added to the already existing turbulence for viewers.
